| Résumé : |
The rising cost of conventional feed ingredients, particularly corn and soybean meal, has increased the need to identify alternative, sustainable, and economically viable feed resources for
the poultry industry. In this context, the present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of incorporating 3% almond hulls (AH) into broiler diets on growth performance and gastrointestinal tract development in cage-reared broiler chickens. A total of 70 one-day-old Hubbard broiler chicks obtained from the same hatchery were randomly allocated into two experimental groups with similar initial body weight (37.88 ± 0.43 g): a control group (C), fed a standard diet, and an experimental group (AH), fed a diet formulated with 3% sweet almond hulls. Birds were reared under identical environmental conditions with ad libitum access to feed and water. The results showed that, under the conditions of the present experiment, the incorporation of 3% almond hulls had no adverse effect on broiler growth performance. Body weight, average daily gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio did not differ significantly between the two groups throughout the rearing period. In contrast, broilers fed the AH diet exhibited significantly higher absolute and relative gizzard weights than the control birds (P = 0.01). A significant increase in both cecal weight and length was also observed in the AH group (P = 0.01). However, the weight and length of the entire gastrointestinal tract, as well as those of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum, remained comparable between the two groups. In conclusion, the incorporation of almond hulls at a dietary inclusion level of 3% appears to be a promising nutritional strategy for valorizing an agro-industrial by-product without compromising broiler growth performance or gastrointestinal tract developmen |
